TEC

Our sweet girl gave us quite the scare last week!! We ended up in the hospital Thursday after labs showed an extremely low red blood cell count.

Transient erythroblastopenia of childhood (TEC) is the diagnosis the hematology team gave us Friday morning. At some point in the last couple of months AK picked up a virus that ended up attacking her bone marrow and shutting down her red blood cell production. No one really knows why or how this happened.

This was right before I took her to the doctor. I didn't realize how pale she had gotten!

Our doctor did an exam and ran a CBC count. Her numbers were so low they thought something was wrong with their machine. They ran it again and same results. So, they sent us to the hospital to have more accurate labs done. They numbers were even lower there! We came back home after the hospital labs but our doctor soon called us and told us to bring her back to the hospital to be admitted. No one had answers at that time so Thursday night was a very long night!!

Our diva didn't want the pulse-ox on her toe b/c she thought it would mess up her toe nail polish! (one of the sweet nurses brought her in more polish:))

Daddy never left her side!

Friday morning labs showed numbers still decreasing so they told us we had to do a blood transfusion very soon or she could go into congestive heart failure.

This was Friday morning before the transfusion

and Friday after the transfusion!

We got to leave Friday evening. We were all glad to be home. We appreciate all of the calls, texts, messages, and especially prayers! We know our God is a healer! We still have to continue to pray that Anna Kate's body will start producing the red blood cells again on her own, but it will be a while before we know that. Until then, lots of finger sticks to check levels each week :(
